Hirsch put away his phone and said, "All right. Vincent and team are contacting all known friends and family of Haisley Charles to see if they know where she's at."

"Have a bad feeling?"

"I do."

"Let's head over to her parents’ house."

"Good idea. It's not too far from here."

Inside Hirsch's car, I said, "I don't like how this is going."

He shook his head. "I don't either. It feels like somebody's eliminating our witnesses, and that is a pretty bad sign."

"I agree. What are the odds that two of the four women last to have seen Tinsley and Emmy alive are now missing or dead?"

Not very high odds. The more I thought about it, the more clear it became that, despite being paraded in front of the news cameras and labeled murderers, Arlo, Jesse, and Warren's lives seemed unaffected by the girl’s deaths. On the other hand, except for Odie, the women's life paths had been altered by the event. Skye had skipped college and ended up dying by suicide. Haisley had also passed on going to college, held a low-paying job, and was missing. Both had come from incredibly wealthy families, and from what I understood, the parents had pushed their kids to go to college no matter what. It was odd both Skye and Haisley would have diverted from their expected paths.

If I had to speculate, I'd say that radical behavior was consistent with survivors suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Lorelei had attended University and seemed to do okay, but it was hard to tell with her. Being a new mom, she was likely exhausted but had seemed shaken by our interview. The only one of the women who seemed to have followed the upper-class path to the letter was Odie. She was also the least rattled by the interviews. Perhaps she had simply dealt with the trauma differently. Although, you can't tell everything from somebody's words or their body language. Some people were skilled at hiding their true feelings and could control their movements to reflect a more confident and positive attitude. Odie was a smart lawyer. It wasn't beyond the realm of possibility that she had been trained to do just that.

Waiting in front of the Charles mansion, it occurred to me why Tinsley and Emmy's deaths may have had such a profound effect on their friends. Looking around the neighborhood with its multimillion dollar homes and beautiful landscaping, it would be easy to assume it was a clean and safe place where bad things didn't happen. It must've been a real shock to their systems that something so heinous and tragic happened to two of their own.

At the front door, Hirsch knocked three times. A woman wearing slacks and a silk blouse with a set of pearls opened the door. "Hello, may I help you?"

"Are you Mrs. Charles?" Hirsch asked.

"Yes, I'm Mrs. Charles. Is this about Haisley?"

"Yes, it is. My name is Detective Hirsch, and this is my partner, Martina Monroe. We'd like to speak with you."

"Yes, please come in.
